WILDER NATIVES

NATIVE HYBRIDS / SELECTIONS

These plants have either been selected and cultivated from native specimens in the wild, or hybridized to exhibit bold new colors, sizes and shapes.

Aquilegia can. ‘Little Lanterns’: Columbine

These delightful dwarf columbine sport the same bright golden and red flowers as the parent specie Aquilegia canadensis, but in a daintier package, reaching just 8” tall and wide. Put these where you can enjoy them up close on a dappled garden path, or a terraced shade garden.

Heuchera vil. ‘Autumn Bride’: Coral Bells

This cultivar Heuchera boasts apple green 9-lobed foliage, and frothy sprays of white blooms in the fall. Its parent plant, Heuchera villosa is found up and down the Appalachian spine. Plants enjoy a moist woodland setting, can take significant dry spells, and are deer resistant. Its fall nectar is popular with hummingbirds and native bees. A wonderful textural accent when planted en masse in dappled shade.

Lobelia card. ‘White Cardinal’: White Cardinal Flower

We, and the bees, are huge fans of the species red cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis. Voila, here’s a super color breakthrough that exhibits the same sun-to-shade loving 3-4’ tall stature, and features bright white blooms. The bases of the petals are subtly streaked with red, giving an almost pepperminty appearance when viewed up close. This one will turn heads in the summer shade garden for sure!

Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’: Tall Phlox

Jeana (pronounced ‘Jenna’) Prewitt was on to something when she discovered this majestic naturally-occurring selection of Phlox paniculata in her garden in Nashville TN. Phlox ‘Jeana’ boasts clean mildew resistant foliage, and produces masses of rose pink to lavender bloom clusters from midsummer through fall on sturdy 3-5’ stems. Ain’t no place we’d rather be!

Sedum ternatum ‘Larinem Park’: Larinem Park Stonecrop

This selection of shade-loving Sedum features bright white blooms atop mats of soft green foliage. Requires well drained soils, and super for a bright shady spot where it can be appreciated up close and personal!
